SHORING STUDY USING A "SANDWICH"-TYPE STEEL STRUCTURE FOR THE FACADE OF A BUILDING LISTED AS A PRESERVED MONUMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE.

The facade of a privately owned building, in Vrisa, Lesvos, was listed as a preserved monument shortly after the June 2017 earthquake. Our firm was commissioned to carry out a study for the (temporary) shoring of the facade until its incorporation into the planned reconstruction of the building. The building itself suffered extensive damage, leading to its partial collapse, and the listed facade had a significant deviation from the vertical.

A framework of steel elements was constructed on the exterior side of the wall, with strong vertical members supporting the wall at each of the framework's six levels, using a combination of metal and wooden elements. On the interior side, where there was no street restriction, a double row of framework was constructed with vertical members of smaller section and diagonal bracing in two directions. The foundation rests on individual reinforced concrete footings.
